Replacement License Plate in New Mexico

What is a License Plate Replacement in New Mexico?

The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division reissues registration plates when the original is lost, stolen, damaged, becomes illegible, or fades. Replacement is a separate transaction from the annual or biennial renewal and has its own fee of $17.00 according to NMSA §66-3-17.

  • New Mexico is a one-plate state. One license plate is mounted on the rear (NMSA §66-3-18), so each replacement includes one plate.
  • Plate continuity depends on the type of plate. According to §66-3-24, the MVD may issue a duplicate with the same number or assign a new registration number, depending on what the division deems most appropriate. Prestige (personalized) plates receive a duplicate with the original set of characters; most other specialty plates receive a new number.
  • Return the old plate if you still have it. Lost or stolen plates, by definition, cannot be returned.
  • Conditions prompting replacement: loss, theft, physical damage, illegibility due to fading or wear, surrendering an out-of-state plate after establishing residency in New Mexico, or a change in vehicle class requiring a different type of plate.

When Do You Need to Replace Your New Mexico License Plate?

The MVD expects owners to act as soon as a plate becomes unserviceable. NMSA §66-3-24 instructs the owner to “immediately apply” after a plate is lost, damaged, or illegible.

  • Missing plate (lost or stolen) requires immediate application for replacement. The legislative “immediately” does not have a fixed number of days.
  • New Mexico does not require a police report before processing a replacement at the MVD. Filing a report with local law enforcement is prudent for stolen plates but is not a prerequisite for the replacement transaction.
  • A peace officer who finds a plate illegible due to wear or damage may issue the owner a citation under §66-3-17(C). This citation creates a 30-day window to apply for and receive a replacement.
  • New residents working in New Mexico for 30 or more days within a 60-day period are considered residents and must register. Non-residents may drive on valid out-of-state plates for up to 180 days according to NMSA §66-3-301.

How to Get a Replacement License Plate in New Mexico

Prepare the current registration record, a valid New Mexico driver’s license or state ID, and the damaged plate if you still have it. Replacement is available through three channels.

  • In person: Visit any of the 32 MVD field offices or one of the 33 municipal partner offices. Verify identity and ownership, surrender the old plate if possible, and pay $17.00. Typically, the replacement plate is issued on the spot. Private providers like MVD Express may add a convenience fee.
  • By mail: Send a written request with the vehicle’s registration number, identification information, and a check or money order for $17.00 payable to MVD, to Motor Vehicle Division, P.O. Box 1028, Santa Fe, NM 87504-1028. Include the damaged plate if it can be returned. The MVD does not publish a guaranteed processing time.
  • Online: The MyMVD portal offers a “Replace My Plate” feature. The portal requires current address and active registration on file. The fee section below covers prices specific to the online channel.

Can You Replace New Mexico License Plate Online?

Yes. The MyMVD Online Services portal accepts plate replacements for standard (yellow, turquoise) and Chile Capital plates. The portal’s “Replace My Plate” option guides the registrant through confirming current address and active registration, then accepts payment by credit or debit card. The replacement plate is mailed to the registrant’s address on file.

Replacement of Chile Capital plates costs $7.25 online, less than the $17.00 in-person replacement. Prestige plates can also be ordered through the portal. Specialty plates requiring specific application forms or eligibility verification still require a visit to an MVD field office.

For mail replacement, send a written request with payment to MVD at P.O. Box 1028, Santa Fe, NM 87504-1028, along with identification and the damaged plate if possible.

If the portal covers your plate type, use it. The online channel avoids the convenience fee charged by private providers and skips the wait at a field office.

How Much is License Plate Replacement in New Mexico?

The base fee is $17.00, but the online channel and plate type alter the actual cost.

  • Standard plates (yellow, turquoise, Chile Capital): $17.00 for in-person replacement, consisting of a $15.00 plate fee and a $2.00 administrative fee according to NMSA §66-3-17 and §66-2-16. Chile Capital replacement reduces to $7.25 via the MyMVD portal.
  • Prestige (personalized) plates have the same $17.00 replacement fee, and the MVD reissues a duplicate with the original set of characters.
  • New Mexico is a one-plate state, so the question of one plate or “both plates” does not arise. Each replacement is one plate, one fee.
  • No county or local fees are imposed on plate replacement. The $17.00 fee is the same at every MVD field office and municipal partner office statewide. Private providers like MVD Express add their own convenience fee, which varies by location.
  • Driving with a lost, damaged, or illegible plate and failing to replace it is an offense with a fine under NMSA §66-8-116, which carries a $25.00 penalty.
