Eligibility for New Mexico License Plates
The issuance of license plates is carried out through the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division, a division of the Taxation and Revenue Department. Any resident operating a vehicle on state roads must register it in accordance with NMSA §66-3-4.
- Residency: Non-residents may operate a vehicle in New Mexico for 180 days on valid license plates from their country. Anyone working for 30 or more days within a 60-day period is considered a resident and must register, according to NMSA §66-3-301.
- Vehicle: Passenger cars, trucks, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, motor homes, manufactured homes, trailers, and off-road vehicles are subject to titling at the MVD. Vehicles with a “salvage” brand require a VIN inspection and salvage certification before license plates can be issued.
- Applicant: Minors cannot hold a title or registration solely in their name; an adult co-owner must be listed. Emancipated minors aged 16 and older are an exception. Two proofs of New Mexico residency and proof of identity must be provided at the office.
- License Plate Categories: Standard, Personalized (prestige), Collegiate, and dozens of plates for various causes are available to any owner. Military plates include Armed Forces Veterans (§66-3-419), Medal of Honor (§66-3-409), Purple Heart (§66-3-414), Prisoner of War (§66-3-411), 50% Disabled Veterans (§66-3-412), Gold Star Family (§66-3-424.24), and National Guard (§66-3-413). Each requires documentation through the MVD Vehicle Services Division.
