New Mexico License Plate Renewal

What Is License Plate Renewal in New Mexico?

License plate renewal continues the registration of a vehicle without changing the plate number. The MVD issues a new validation sticker and registration certificate. The title remains unchanged; title transfer is a separate transaction conducted only at an MVD field office.

  • New Mexico assigns each vehicle an expiration month according to NMSA § 66-3-19. Owners choose a one- or two-year period at each renewal.
  • Passenger cars, light trucks up to 26,000 pounds, and motorcycles follow this cycle. Freight trailers have permanent registration and are never renewed.
  • The Motor Vehicle Division sends a renewal reminder postcard before expiration. This postcard contains a control number needed for online and phone renewal.
  • No plate replacement occurs during renewal. The only item that changes is the validation sticker on the rear plate.

When Do You Need To Renew Your New Mexico License Plate?

Registration expires on the last day of the month shown on the sticker. The MVD accepts renewal applications at any point before this date. No statutory grace period softens a missed deadline.

  • Renew anytime before expiration; NMSA § 66-3-19(C) sets no minimum on how far in advance you can apply.
  • A flat $10 penalty applies within 30 days after expiration. After 30 days, the penalty increases to 75 percent of the full registration fee.
  • Only Bernalillo County requires an emissions test before processing renewal. The City of Albuquerque’s emissions program checks vehicles up to 10,000 pounds GVW every two years; new vehicles are exempt for four model years.
  • Outside Bernalillo County, no inspection blocks the renewal transaction, as currently published by the MVD.

How To Renew Your License Plate in New Mexico

Before choosing a channel, ensure your insurance is active, and if you’re in Bernalillo County, your emissions certificate is on record. Prepare your renewal reminder postcard or plate number and the last six characters of the VIN.

  • The online portal MyMVD handles most renewals for passenger cars and light trucks. Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover are accepted. Fees described in the next section apply, except for a 5 percent discount on the base fee.
  • Kiosks at select Albuquerque locations print the sticker on-site and provide the same 5 percent discount. The MVD kiosks page lists current locations.
  • Call 888-683-4636 to renew by phone IVR; a credit card is required, and the same 5 percent discount applies.
  • Mail a check payable to the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division with the renewal form to: Registration Renewal Section, MVD, PO Box 25129, Santa Fe, NM 87504-5129. Cash or card numbers are not accepted by mail. Delivery takes two to three weeks.
  • Any MVD field office accepts cash or check in person for one- or two-year renewals.

How Much Is License Plate Renewal in New Mexico?

Fees depend on weight and model year. Basic renewal is moderate, but late penalties and additional fees for special plates can significantly increase the total beyond what most owners expect.

  • Passenger cars pay $27 to $62 for one year or $54 to $124 for two years, according to the MVD fee schedule. A 25 percent increase took effect on July 1, 2026, raising the one-year range to approximately $26-70 per NMDOT.
  • Trucks up to 26,000 pounds DGVW cost $38 to $207 per year, subject to change under the same increase. The July 2026 adjustment did not affect motorcycles or buses.
  • Renewals more than 30 days late incur a penalty equal to 75 percent of the registration fee according to NMSA § 66-3-19(E). The penalty for 30 days or less is $10.
  • Special plates add an annual surcharge to the base: prestige plates cost $17 per year, and collegiate or themed plates range from $12 to $42 per year, according to the MVD plate catalog.
  • No county-level surcharges apply. New Mexico sets a single statewide fee schedule.

Can I Renew My License Plate Online in New Mexico?

Most passenger cars and light trucks are eligible for online renewal through MyMVD at eservices.mvd.newmexico.gov. Enter your control number or plate number plus the last six characters of the VIN. The portal charges a credit card processing fee of $1.65 on amounts up to $275 or 1.99 percent over that threshold.

Vehicles over 26,000 pounds, commercial registrations, and first titles cannot be processed online. For them, visit any MVD field office nationwide. Offices open at 8:00 AM and close at 4:00 PM with a lunch break.

Mail is another remote option:

  • Send the renewal form from your postcard and a check to MVD, PO Box 25129, Santa Fe, NM 87504-5129.
  • Allow two to three weeks for the new validation sticker and certificate to arrive.

If MyMVD accepts your vehicle, online renewal is the cheapest route; the 5 percent discount offsets most credit card fees.
